A North Logan man has been sentenced to prison for beating his young stepson and a judge says he will recommend the man serves the maximum of 30 years.

Brandon Randall Nelson, 24, pleaded guilty in November to two second-degree felony counts of child abuse. On Monday, 1st District Judge Clint Judkins sentenced Nelson to consecutive prison terms of one to 15 years, adding that he would ask the Board of Pardons and Parole to keep the man behind bars for the entirety of the sentence.

"I’ve never seen a judge say that in open court before," said Cache County prosecutor Tony Baird.

Nelson was charged in June with abusing his stepson but was not jailed. According to prosecutors, Nelson was free on Aug. 31 when the toddler’s mother took the child to the hospital because he was having seizures.

Baird said the 3-year-old will likely suffer long-term effects of the abuse.

"The child may walk with a limp for the rest of his life and his eyesight has not returned to 100 percent," Baird said. "Time will only tell about all these things."

The child’s mother, 23-year-old Angelee Michelle Nelson, has also been charged with felony counts of child abuse because officials say she failed to protect her son from Brandon Nelson.
