Elkton, Md. • A Maryland judge has unsealed an indictment charging a doctor with murder in connection with five abortions.

Steven Brigham of Voorhees, N.J., was arraigned in Cecil County Circuit Court on Friday. He faces five counts each of first-and second-degree murder in abortions allegedly performed at an Elkton clinic and one count of conspiracy.

The Cecil Whig reports that bond was set at $500,000, which court documents show the 55-year-old Brigham has made arrangements to post.

Brigham’s co-defendant, Nicola Irene Riley, of Salt Lake City, remains jailed in Utah without bond.

The allegations against Riley and Brigham mark the first time abortion providers have been charged under a Maryland law that allows authorities to bring murder charges in the death of a viable fetus.
