A 25-year-old man was critically injured Thursday when part of a road sign flew through his windshield in a chain-reaction crash that started when a woman swerved to miss a deer north of Tooele.
The accident happened about 2:30 p.m. on State Road 36 near the Erda turnoff, said Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson. A 29-year-old woman was driving a Subaru Impreza south when she swerved to avoid the deer and hit a metal caution sign in the median, said UHP Trooper Chris Lewis.

The sign was knocked into the northbound lanes, where another car hit it and threw the metal base of the sign into the air. It flew through the windshield of a third vehicle, a Chevrolet Silverado, and struck the driver’s face and chest. The first car, meanwhile, came to rest in the southbound lanes and was hit by a cement truck.
The woman escaped with minor injuries, and an ambulance took her to Mountain West Medical Center. The man was flown to a hospital in Salt Lake City. The other two drivers weren’t hurt.
State Road 36 was closed for an hour and a half.
