The mother of a 19-year-old man who died during a South Salt Lake shooting that broke out after a concert in South Salt Lake, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the business hosting the event.

Patricia Lopez is suing SJS Limited Partnership in connection of the shooting of her son Stephen Lopez at the Arbat Reception Hall, claiming the defendant was "negligent by not providing supervision and adequate security to insure the safety of the patrons."

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in 3rd District Court.

The shooting happened on Oct. 1 at the reception hall at 375 East and 3300 South after a concert featuring rapper Big Tone.

Lopez's son and daughter, Stephen and Victoria, attended the concert.

The lawsuit says that just as the concert was concluding, a dispute broke out among the guests and gunshots were fired randomly over and into the crowd.

"Without any fault of his own for having started the dispute, Stephen Lopez received a bullet to his chest," the lawsuit says.

In the confusion to get medical help for those hurt, Stephen Lopez was the last person to be taken to the hospital, the lawsuit states.

He died later at the hospital. Two other people were shot and two others stabbed, police said after the incident.

Lopez's mother claims the "defendant's duties were foreseeable in that the event and the rapper's audience required that due care and security be maintained to avoid injury and loss of life that occurred."

The negligent acts by the defendant resulted in the wrongful death of her son, the lawsuit says.

The mother seeks an unspecified amount in damages to be proven at trial.

South Salt Lake police continue to investigate the case. No people of interest have been found, and no arrests have been made in relation to the case, police said.
