A 24-year-old woman was in serious condition Tuesday, the day after undergoing surgery to repair her legs, which were badly broken when she was hit by a Utah Transit Authority Bus in West Valley City.
West Valley City police Sgt. Mike Powell also said that the driver of the bus had been cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian. UTA, meanwhile, has placed the driver on administrative leave pending review including screening for drugs or alcohol.
However, Powell said police detectives had closed their part of the investigation without finding any indication of drug or alcohol use in relation to the accident.
The woman, whose name was being withheld, was struck in a crosswalk at 3650 S. 3200 West by the Route 41 bus as it made a left turn about 10:35 a.m. Monday. The woman fell beneath the bus and the vehicle's front tires ran over her legs.
UTA spokesman Gerry Carpenter said that the last serious accident was when a bus hit and killed a pedestrian on Nov. 24, 2010, in Salt Lake City. Two other accidents involving jaywalkers in Ogden and in South Salt Lake City resulted in minor injuries to the pedestrians, Carpenter said.
However, UTA despite repeated safety information campaigns has had a high rate of pedestrian accidents this year, with TRAX striking eight people and FrontRunner trains striking two. Seven of those accidents resulted in deaths.
