Smithfield • A Smithfield man has been arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse after his infant son was hospitalized with severe skull and brain injuries.

Smithfield Police Chief Johnny McCoy told The Herald Journal of Logan that 30-year-old Justin Collett was booked Friday, a day after his 16-day-old son was taken to a Salt Lake City hospital.

Investigators believe the injury occurred sometime late Wednesday or early Thursday when Collett was tending the boy in his mother's absence.

After her return home, the mother told officers that Collett maintained the baby had fallen. But medical experts told police they did not believe the injuries were the result of an accident.

McCoy says the child was in stable condition at the hospital's pediatric intensive care unit.
