A 62-year-old man died in a rollover accident early Tuesday morning on U.S. Highway 6 in Spanish Fork Canyon.
Jerry Mac Griffis from Fort Davis, Texas, died at the scene. Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson said the crew of a passing Union Pacific train spotted a car near the tracks, about five miles west of Soldier Summit.
Johnson said for unknown reasons Griffis lost control of his red pickup and went off the road. The eastbound pickup swerved left, Griffis corrected to the right, spinning the vehicle 180 degrees. It rolled a couple of times down a steep embarkment, UHP reported. Griffis, who was not wearing a seat belt was ejected. The pickup rolled over a wire fence and came to stop in an upright position, UHP said.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
