A 24-year-old man was killed Tuesday morning in the crosswalk of a Salt Lake City intersection.

Geoffrey Claiborne was hit by a car at 100 South and 400 East, and died at the scene of the 4:47 a.m. accident, police said.

Claiborne was in the southside crosswalk of the intersection, walking from east to west, when he was struck by the northbound car, said police Sgt. Shawn Josephson.

Police confirmed the victim was dressed in dark clothing that made him harder to see in the pre-dawn darkness. He also was believed to have been crossing against the light.

Josephson said there is an incline on the road where Claiborne was hit, and that factor also likely made it more difficult for the driver to see the man until it was too late.

No citations were issued, but the accident remains under investigation.
