A father and son learned an important lesson about gun safety Friday night at an indoor shooting range in Taylorsville. In a mishap, the son was shot in the stomach but is expected to fully recover.

A father in his 50s and his 16-year-old son just finished target shooting at Doug's Shoot'n Sports, 4926 S. Redwood Road — an indoor shooting range and gun shop — at about 6:30 p.m., said Taylorsville police Sgt. Tracy Wyant. When the father put his .45-caliber handgun in a case it accidentally discharged.

A round struck the teen in the finger and then in the abdomen, Wyant said. The teen was taken to a local hospital in fair condition, but was upgraded and expected to make a full recovery.

The accident serves as a good gun safety reminder to stay vigilant when handling guns and use proper technique, Wyant said.

"This is certainly a mishap, we are grateful the injuries were not worse," Wyant said, adding that police are sure it was an accident and "the father feels terrible."

"We are confident it was an accidental situation, there is nothing suspicious about it," Wyant said.

No charges will be filed.
