A South Salt Lake man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of threatening his family with a samurai sword because he believed his wife was having an affair with his son-in-law, according to police.
A member of the 42-year-old man's family called police from a locked basement bedroom about 8 p.m. Sunday to report the man was armed with a sword and yelling threats outside the door, according to a jail booking statement.
The man lives with his wife, three children and oldest daughter's husband. They told police he threatened to hurt them all, wouldn't let them leave the house and threatened to kill the rest of the family if they left, according to the booking statement.
Police arrived and "got it all sorted out with no objections," said South Salt Lake Police spokesman Gary Keller. "It ended safely for everyone, I'm glad to say."
The man denied holding the sword or making threats. He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony, along with unlawful detention and domestic violence in the presence of a child, both class B misdemeanors. He also had outstanding warrants for driving on a suspended license, retail theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.
