Two men remained in critical condition Saturday, the day after they were gunned down on a west Salt Lake City street during an apparent gang-related confrontation.

Salt Lake City police Lt. J.R. Nelson said the two men were walking on a sidewalk in the 600 block of Lamarne Street (1130 West) about 10:45 p.m. Friday when a silver, four-door Volkswagen Jetta pulled up beside them.

A passenger got out of the car and approached the men and, according to witnesses, an argument ensued, followed by several gunshots. The gunman then jumped back into the car and sped away.

Both victims suffered gunshot wounds, though police would not provide further details abouttheir injuries.

Nelson said the investigation has been turned over to the department's gang unit, but no descriptions of the assailant were immediately available.

Anyone with information on the case is urged to call police at 801-799-3000.
