Artifact traffickers sentenced to probation
Two San Juan County men will face a year of probation for their roles in the Four Corners artifacts-trafficking case that netted about two dozen indictments in 2009.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Samuel Alba sentenced Rulon Kody Sommerville and Kevin Shumway on Friday in a Moab courtroom, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Salt Lake City. Both had pleaded guilty to misdemeanors after being indicted on more serious charges of trading in illegally obtained American-Indian artifacts.
Although many involved in the case were convicted of felonies, none has done prison time for trafficking artifacts.
Also on Friday, defendant David A. Lacy entered a plea deal. He is scheduled for sentencing in November.
