Voters throughout Utah go to the polls Tuesday to winnow the number of city council and mayoral candidates who will run in November's general election.

Tuesday's primary includes two high-profile council races in Salt Lake City. The race in east-side District 6 has been defined by controversy over a rejected rezoning for a Walmart and how best to preserve the historic character of the Yalecrest neighborhood.

Meanwhile, voters in west-side District 2 were targeted by an anonymous mailer that made accusations of religious bigotry.

In Ogden, eight people are vying to fill the mayor's seat after Matthew Godfrey decided against seeking re-election.

Voting locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
