Fire and hazmat crews handled a natural gas leak at the Gold Cross Ambulance parking area Monday morning.

A construction crew struck the line in the center parking strip at 762 S. Redwood Road, said Salt Lake Fire Department Capt. Mark Bednarik.

Traffic in the area is being diverted around the area, and crews from Questar arrived to turn off the line.

Buildings in the area were checked, but there was no gas inside.

"Natural gas usually goes straight up because it's lighter than air," Bednarik said. "It if doesn't originate in buildings, then it usually doesn't cause a problem."
