Police on Thursday arrested a man they believe may be linked to as many as 20 residential burglaries in Cottonwood Heights and possibly others in Sandy.
Cottonwood Heights Police Sgt. Mark Askerlund said officers received a tip that a home near 2100 E. Sego Lily Drive (10300 South) in Sandy was the next target of the burglars.
Officers staked out the home, and spotted Dylan Mitani, 21, enter the garage and steal a high-end bicycle, he said. They said a getaway vehicle, with another man inside, was parked a short distance away.
When police attempted to arrest Mitani, they said he jumped on the stolen bike and attempted to flee; when he couldn't ride any further, he ran away on foot. Askerlund said officers captured him, but the driver of the getaway vehicle got away.
He said police on Thursday afternoon were searching for that man and a third person believed to be involved.
Askerlund said the three men are believed to have been operating a burglary ring where high-end mountain and road bicycles valued at $400 to $4,000 were stolen. He said the burglars also stole items like golf clubs and generators. They then pawned them at shops around the area.
He said some of the stolen items have already been sold, but others will likely be recovered.
The men are believed to be connected with 15 to 20 burglaries in Cottonwood Heights during the past month, Askerlund said. He said Sandy police are investigating whether the men have committed other burglaries there.
Askerlund said Mitani, whose city of residence was unknown, was arrested on suspicion of 10 to 12 felony counts of residential burglary.
