A teen boy was killed in a single-car rollover accident in Centerville after the SUV in which he was a passenger went out of control on a dirt road Saturday.

Gabriel Hansen, 15, of Farmington, was killed after he was thrown from the SUV that rolled at least twice, said Centerville Police Sgt. Von Steenblik. Two other teens were taken to local hospitals, one in stable condition and the other critical.

A group of seven teenagers ranging in age from 15 to 17, most from Farmington, were in a Ford Explorer heading south on Lower Pipeline Road (1500 West) near Lund Lane (1700 South) just before 7 p.m. when the accident occurred.

The dirt road initially starts out smooth, Steenblik said, but eventually becomes bumpy with pot holes. It was here that police believe the 17-year-old driver had trouble.

"They lost control and rolled — ejecting at least two of the passengers that were in the back," Steenblik said, adding that Hansen was killed instantly. Five of the teens were wearing seat belts, but two sitting in the back were not.

Two medical helicopters took two others to area hospitals. One was taken to the hospital in serious condition, the other — a boy ejected from the SUV — was transported in critical condition with internal and possible head injuries. Four others were taken to local hospitals by ambulance and are expected to recover.

Police believe speed to be a possible cause of the accident. Hansen and the boy in critical condition were not wearing seat belts, police said.
