The Sevier County Sheriff's Office is investigating a Salina police officer's fatal shooting of a man pulled over on suspicion of drunken driving Friday night.

Sheriff Nathan Curtis said Saturday that the Salina officer, who was not identified, has been placed on administrative leave.

The shooting occurred shortly after the officer, alerted by dispatchers of a complaint about a possible drunken driver, pulled the man over about 8:30 p.m., near 500 West and 100 South in Salina.

The officer determined Jeffrey J. Sorensen, 43, of Redmond, appeared intoxicated and moved to arrest him. While trying to handcuff Sorensen, a struggle ensued. The fight ended when the officer shot Sorensen once.

After initial treatment by the Salina officer, paramedics, and Sevier County deputies and Utah Highway Patrol, Sorensen was taken to Sevier Valley Hospital, where he died.

The sheriff's office declined to release further details and would not say where on his body Sorensen was shot.

Curtis said results of the investigation will be turned over to the Sevier County Attorney's Office, which will determine whether the shooting was justified.
