Davis County sheriff's deputies Wednesday night arrested two men and a woman in connection with a wildfire that burned south of Farmington Canyon.
Davis County sheriff's Sgt. Susan Poulsen said the trio started a fire in an area where they weren't allowed to burn and were also target shooting in an illegal area.
Poulsen said authorities weren't sure which action started the blaze that crews had just about extinguished by 11 p.m. She said the trio tried to put the fire out themselves, but it got out of control. All were arrested on suspicion of reckless burning and shooting in an illegal area, class A misdemeanors, she said.
She said the blaze had burned about 40 acres by about 9:30 p.m., but burned away from structures and east of the mountains. Poulsen said the fire burned in Farmington, but on Forest Service lands. A final estimate on acreage burned was not immediately available.
No structures were threatened.
One firefighter had to be removed from the mountain because of heat exhaustion, but did not require medical treatment, she said. Helicopters were called in to provide air support, but were called off as night fell. Officials said crews remained on scene late Wednesday extinguishing hot spots.
More than a half-dozen fire departments responded.
