A woman was hit and killed Saturday by a FrontRunner train in the area of 1600 North and 500 West in Sunset.
The accident happened about 4:40 p.m. Sunset Police Chief Ken Eborn said the woman, whose identity was not immediately made public, was on the railroad tracks in an area with no crosswalk and where no pedestrians should be. "She would have had to intentionally walk a fair distance to get there," Eborn said.
The conductor of the train told police the woman appeared to be hiding in some bushes and as the train approached, she ran out onto the tracks.
Police believe they knowthe womn's identity, but want to have her family confirmit.
Gerry Carpenter with Utah Transit Authority said the train was northbound and the accident happened between the Clearfield and Roy stations. The train was believed to be traveling close to its top speed of 79 mph in that area of travel. Tracks in both directions were closed for about two and half hours as police investigated and cleared the accident.
As per policy, the operator of the train was put on administrative leave pending results of the investigation. About 60 passengers on the train were transported by bus to their destinations.
This is the second fatal train accident in the area in the past week. Pamela Mae Garn, 52, was killed by a freight train a half-mile north of Saturday's accident site, near 2300 North. Her body was discovered on the Union Pacific tracks Thursday morning.
