St. George police Friday were investigating the suicide of a St. George woman who called police dispatch, said she wanted to be an organ donor then killed herself with a shot to the head.

The woman's identity was not released Friday.

Police Capt. Scott Staley said after the woman called dispatchers at 11:45 a.m., said she wanted to donate her organs and they heard the "pop" of the firearm. Staley did not know what kind of weapon was used or the woman's age.

He said her location was not immediately known, but calls from the hospital allowed officers to quickly respond to the location at 1380 E. medical Center Drive.

Staley said the woman was in the hospital's parking lot when she shot herself.

Medical staff at the hospital tried to save the woman, but she died from the wound.

He said the body will probably be sent to the Medical Examiner's Office in Salt Lake City for an autopsy.
