A former Provo police officer will not see jail time for reportedly stealing painkillers from a home while pretending to conduct an investigation.
Troy Brewer, 33, pleaded guilty this week in Provo Justice Court to a class B misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance. A class B misdemeanor charge of theft was dismissed.
Judge Scott Cullimore sentenced Brewer to six months of probation and ordered him to pay a fine of $623. Court records show Brewer has already completed a treatment program.
According to reports from the Utah County Sheriff's Office, which investigated the case, Brewer responded to a complaint in February at a home in the Provo River Bottoms. But Brewer kept returning to the home, claiming to be following up on the investigation, officials have said.
The homeowner became suspicious and installed a video camera that reportedly caught Brewer taking the pain medication from a cabinet in the home.
