A boy died late Tuesday after being ejected from an out-of-control car on a Summit County stretch of Interstate 80.

Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson identified the victim as 12-year-old Kaleb Mitchell, whose hometown was not immediately known.

The 7:17 p.m. accident occurred about five miles northwest of Coalville and near I-84's Echo Junction, when a westbound Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Robert Mitchell, 68, of Sandy, drifted off the right side of the road and struck a guardrail.

Johnson said the car was then swerved back to the left, crossing both westbound lanes and striking the end of another guardrail before coming to rest in the travel lanes facing toward the freeway's median.

Mitchell and three other passengers — a woman, Marilyn Mitchell, 66, of Sandy, and two unidentified 9-year-old girls — sustained minor injuries. Johnson said all of them were wearing seatbelts.

However, Johnson said troopers on Wednesday still were trying to determine if the victim's seatbelt had been fastened properly, since the boy was ejected.

The boy, who suffered severe trauma, was flown by helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City, but later died.

No citations were immediately issued, and the crash continued to be under investigation Wednesday.
