A St. George construction worker was hit by a front-end loader and killed Wednesday morning in southern Utah.

A CAT 950H bucket front-end loader was in use on the west side of Interstate 15, where an interchange is being rebuilt, when it hit, ran over, and killed 43-year-old Charles D. Grundy.

The accident happened about 8:15 a.m. just southwest of New Harmony near the Ash Creek Reservoir, Utah Highway Patrol reported.

The loader was operating on uneven terrain with the bucket raised, and the driver was not able to see the victim in front of him, according to UHP. A witness told UHP that Grundy had his back turned away from the loader and was talking on his cellphone.

Grundy was hit in the back of the head, fell face down, and was ran over. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
