A 2-year-old boy who fell into the Virgin River on Wednesday died Sunday night at a Salt Lake City hospital.

The boy, whose name had not been released, died about 7 p.m., said Washington County sheriff's detective Nate Abbott.

The boy was the eighth person to drown in a Utah river or lake since April.

He and his family were camping near Springdale and had been playing close to the river when the boy fell in, Lt. Rob Tersigni said last week.

The boy was pulled from the water around 8:30 p.m., sheriff's dispatchers reported.

Tersigni said it was not known how long the boy was in the water.

He was flown to Primary Children's Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition until his death on Sunday.
