St. George police say the driver in a suspected Tuesday hit-and-run accident that left a female jogger fighting for her life has contacted investigators.

On Thursday, St. George police Sgt. Craig Harding, citing the ongoing investigation, would not identify the driver or even confirm the gender. Harding did say, however, that city prosecutors are reviewing the case and may soon file charges.

"I can say that we have located the driver of the vehicle. We know who it is, and where they are, but they are not in custody. The driver is cooperating" with investigators, Harding said, and was not considered a further flight risk.

It turns out the driver actually was at the scene when emergency personnel arrived, but when questioned did not disclose his or her role in the accident. Harding said the driver then left the scene but eventually — police did not say when — called police to say he or she had driven the car involved.

Meanwhile, the victim — 59-year-old Marva Cutler — remained in critical condition Thursday at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where she was flown by medical helicopter on Tuesday.

"I talked with her husband this morning. She is still critical but doing well, and he says the doctors are optimistic," Harding said.

Cutler was struck about 7:55 a.m. Tuesday as she ran along near 3100 Little Valley Road. She was found lying unconscious near the road a short time later by a passer-by, who called 911.
