A Vernal woman was sentenced Wednesday to probation for failing to report the rape of her 16-year-old foster child in January.

Nola K. Fortine, 66, found the teen girl in bed with her 46-year-old son on the morning of Jan. 2 but did not report the incident, according to the charges against her.

Fortine had been charged with third-degree felony witness tampering for allegedly coaching the girl about what to say if she were questioned by authorities, but that charge was dropped when Fortine pleaded guilty in June to a misdemeanor count of failure to report abuse.

Fortine was sentenced on the class B misdemeanor charge Wednesday in 8th District Court. As part of her sentence, Fortine was ordered to a pay a $400 fine.

Fortine was licensed as a foster parent in May 1993, April 2009 and again in May 2010, according to the Department of Child and Family Services. Fortine had three children living in her home on Jan. 1, but all were removed after Jan. 4, DCFS officials said. Fortine's license was removed March 14.

Fortine's son, George B. Stone, was sentenced Tuesday to three years to life in prison on a first-degree felony count of forcible sodomy.

According to court documents, Stone made the teen vodka and orange juice drinks until she passed out in a hot tub.

Then Stone raped the girl multiple times and took nude photographs of her, the charges state.
