It's time for Taylorsville residents to get new address labels.

After seven years of urging, the United States Postal Service is giving the west-side city its own ZIP code.

The codes that cover most of the city — 84118, 84119 and 84084 — will be 84129 within Taylorsville as of July 1. Postal carriers will continue to deliver mail that has the old ZIP codes until July 1, 2012.

The new ZIP code will be specific to Taylorsville. The old codes were shared with other communities, including West Valley City, Kearns, Murray and West Jordan.

A number of Taylorsville residents, primarily those who live east of Redwood Road, will retain the 84123 ZIP code, which is shared with Murray.

The change affects more than mail delivery, according to city officials.

They say property values will be more accurately represented; the city can apply for federal grants based on accurate demographic information of its residents; businesses can market themselves as a Taylorsville enterprise; and sales taxes that belong to the city can be received in a timely manner.
