American Preparatory Academy has been named Charter School of the Year by the Utah Association of Public Charter Schools. The academy, which has campuses in Draper and West Valley City that serve 1,040 students, was one of more than 50 schools nominated for the award by parents, teachers and charter school leaders across Utah.

More than 7,000 students are on a waiting list to get into American Preparatory, which accepts new students using a random lottery when space is available. The charter school is opening a third, accelerated campus this fall.

The award was announced Wednesday at the Fifth Annual UAPCS conference, which continues Thursday at Salt Lake Community College's Larry H. Miller Campus in Sandy.
