Charges are being screened against a 17-year-old boy who falsely claimed he was kidnapped so he could stay at his girlfriend's house instead of going home.

Salt Lake City police said the boy did not want to return home Monday night at his father's request. The boy then sent a text to his dad that stated he would never see his son again.

The father called police shortly before midnight and reported the text. Police called the boy's 18-year-old girlfriend at her home in Salt Lake City, but she denied knowing where the boy was, police said.

The boy then got back in touch with his father because he didn't want his girlfriend to get in trouble for lying to police.

Police drove to the girlfriend's house and found the juvenile, who continued to claim he had been kidnapped. Police later concluded the kidnapping was a hoax.

Charges will be screened against the boy and his girlfriend, police said.
