Visitors who bring nonperishable food donations can tour Masonic lodges across Utah from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Temples in several cities, including the grand Salt Lake Masonic Temple on South Temple Street, will host open houses for the general public to collect food to benefit the Utah Food Bank.
Last year, the statewide effort gathered more than 900 pounds of food from more than 1,600 Utahns, the organization said in a statement. Members are hoping to top that number this year.
"Charity is one of the cornerstones of our organization, and this open house gives us the opportunity to work directly with the community to help those who are less fortunate or are undergoing hardship," said Grand Master of Utah Masons, John C. Liley, Jr.
The five-story Salt Lake Masonic Temple is the largest in the state and headquarters of the Grand Lodge of Masons in Utah. There are 29 Masonic lodges in the state.
The Masonic Foundation of Utah said it donates $250,000 a year to Utah charities and scholarships, the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, and Rite Care Learning Centers, which treat children with speech disorders in Ogden and Salt Lake City.
