A man charged in connection with the alleged kidnapping and attempted murder of a Midvale man has pleaded guilty to reduced charges.

Cory D. Northrup, 31, had been charged in 3rd District Court with two first-degree felonies but pleaded guilty last week to aggravated assault and reckless endangerment, both class A misdemeanors.

He was sentenced to a year in jail with credit for 111 days already served.

The victim, 26, says that, in January, he was taken from a Midvale Motel 6 to Grantsville, where a group of people tried to kill him.

The victim has said he was taken from a car to a field in Tooele County. There, he jumped a fence and ran to a nearby house for help. The victim said a gunman — 28-year-old Eli Johnson — tried to shoot him, but the gun misfired. Four other shots missed him as he ran.

Police have declined to confirm a direct link between the alleged kidnapping and the case of a man charged with running into a Cottonwood Heights police officer with a stolen car last October, but Cottonwood Heights officials have said they are investigating a possible tie.

Johnson was sentenced last month to up to 20 years in prison for aggravated assault and kidnapping.

Michele Renee Gallegos, 34, and Derek Andrews, 20, have also been charged in connection with the alleged plot.
