After being placed on paid leave amid a Canyons School District probe of racism at Alta High, the school's assistant principal, Mark Montague, is back at work at a new school.
Montague has been reassigned to Butler Middle in Cottonwood Heights as an assistant principal, Canyons spokesman Jeff Haney said Tuesday. Corrie Barratt, an assistant principal at Butler, will move to Alta High to replace Montague.
Montague, who has worked in education for 33 years, said Tuesday that Butler is a "great school." It will be his first administrative stint at a middle school. He declined to discuss the reasons for his move.
On Friday, Canyons announced it had wrapped up its investigation at Alta High, which began after a junior allegedly wore a Ku Klux Klan-like hood and made pro-Nazi references at a school assembly. A week later, two students circulated a text message showing a Klansman in front of a burning cross. All three were cited by Sandy police and referred to juvenile court.
But Canyons reported it had "confirmed" there were additional "serious racial incidents" at Alta, while staying silent on the details. Those incidents have been referred to Sandy police for further investigation, the district said.
"The district has concluded its initial investigation into these allegations and taken swift and appropriate administrative action to address them," Canyons said in a statement released Friday.
Former Alta High Principal Mont Widerberg also was placed on paid administrative leave a week after the investigation began. He retired a few days later.
Canyons is conducting a search for a new principal at Alta. Raymond Jenson is serving as interim principal.
