This year, the city's finest will be playing softball for an additional reason: The faceoff is a fundraiser for Dave Taylor, a veteran firefighter who is battling a cancerous brain tumor. West Valley Fire Local 2970 and the west-side suburb's police are hosting a barbecue with food donated by area businesses. Food will be $5: all proceeds and donations will benefit Taylor and his family.
Taylor has undergone brain surgery, chemotherapy and radiation this year and faces more treatment. The engineer/paramedic retired from the department this summer after 25 years of service.
"Serving the community is what we do every day as firefighters and police officers," said Trever Mcintyre, a firefighter with Local 2970. "It is a privilege to serve others and an honor to serve one of our own."
The game starts at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at Centennial Park's west field, 5415 W. 3100 South. In addition to money raised at the game, donations are being accepted at any Mountain America Credit Union to the Engineer Dave Taylor Trust.
