Cyprus High senior class raising money for new ‘C’ on hillside

The senior class at Cyprus High School is trying to leave its mark in the biggest way possible.

The class is holding fundraisers to replace the rock C on the Oquirrh Mountains with a more permanent structure.

The C is on Rio Tinto land, but the company has done all the safety inspections and approved the creation of a letter made of shotcrete, which is concrete filtered with fiberglass to make it last longer. The company is also donating a $15,000 grant to match donations from the community.

"We’ve been telling people if you donate $10, you’re really donating $20, and that’s helping people give more and make more smaller donations," said McClain Chipman, senior class president, who has spearheaded the "C the Difference" campaign.

The project will cost about $60,000, though, and the class is hosting a fundraiser tonight — a walkathon where people can walk 20 laps around the Cyprus football field. Entrance fees are $5 for an individual, $15 for a family of four or $25 for a relay team of five. The event goes from 6 p.m. to midnight at 8623 W. 3000 South, Magna.

Bounce houses will be up and a family-friendly movie will be shown on the football field. Free food will be provided, and the semifinals of a dodgeball tournament will offer other entertainment. Everything has been donated, so all the money will go to building the new C.

Those who can’t attend the event but still want to donate can mail a check to Granite Education Foundation, 2500 S. State St., D180, South Salt Lake, UT 84115 or make a donation online at www.graniteeducationfoundation.org/domain/35. So far, the school has collected about $3,000 through such donations.

"This has been made possible by the senior class of 2012," Chipman said. "It’s a group effort for sure."
