Sprint U.S. Grand Prix returns to Canyons this weekend
Park City • The 2012 Sprint U.S. Grand Prix will return to the Canyons resort this weekend.
The event, featuring six-time X Games snowboardcross gold medalist Nate Holland, 2011 SBX podium finisher Jonathan Cheever and 2011 X Games skicross champion John Teller, opens Thursday and runs through Sunday. Each event will determine the 2012 U.S. Champions.
"I am pumped to come back to Park City and race at the Canyons," said Holland, of Squaw Valley, Calif. "Park City has become a second home for me being that I have been training there for the last two years. I've also been able to enjoy their mountain biking in the fall. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of course they have built."
The event brings together the world's top athletes in snowboardcross and, fir the first time this year, skicross. In both events, athletes compete head-to-head on an inclined, turn-and-jump-filled course that races to a finish line at ski Beach. Skiers and riders will compete for more than $84,000 in prize money.
Qualification runs take place on Thursday and Friday. The skicross finals begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, while the snowboardcross finals start at 10 a.m. Sunday.
The North Face Junior Jam, a competition that will showcase young talent from the Park City, will be part of the event. After Saturday's medal presentation, Los Angeles-based Ozomati will perform a free concert in the Canyons Resort Village.
All events are free to spectators.
