Valerie Olson has volunteered at the Utah State Veterans Nursing Home in Salt Lake City since her husband became a resident there. Instead of simply visiting her husband, the Sandy woman makes her rounds. She routinely visits residents who don’t receive many visitors, exchanging stories one-on-one and making them laugh.

"She brings a peaceful feeling to our home," volunteer coordinator Nicole Herway wrote, "and remembers the small and simple things that make a big difference in each resident’s life."
