Utah Senior Village will host a welcoming event at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts on June 12 to tell seniors about services available through the program.
The event, held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., also will provide free admission to the museum's SPEED exhibit for attendees age 50 and older.
The Village concept focuses on the Avenues, Capitol Hill and Federal Heights neighborhoods in Salt Lake City. It provides members with access to services such as trips to the symphony and movies, assistance with home repairs and health and education classes, Village Executive Director Richard Starley said.
"It's about helping each other, finding services and doing things together," Starley said. "[It's about] having what gerontologists call 'healthy aging,' which is all about a sound mind and body, a good environment, a good social life, support and all those kinds of things."
Membership costs $600 for a two-or-more member household or $480 for a single member household per year. There are currently "a few" members, Starley said.
The Utah Senior Village model, based on the original Village concept started in Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood, was created last June.
Starley, who is a resident of the Avenues, said he hopes the event will get information out to seniors and show them the concept is an asset to their communities.
"We are going to be talking a little bit during the evening about the Village movement and about how Utah Senior Village is set up," Starley said. "[We'll be] encouraging people to join, and we will have the ability for people to join right then."
