Fire at Los Angeles seaport has been extinguished

Los Angeles • A fire at on old wooden wharf at the Port of Los Angeles has been extinguished and normal operations are resuming after an idle day brought on by smoke from the blaze.

Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey says the fire sparked Monday evening by a welding accident was declared out shortly after 4 a.m. Wednesday MDT.

No injuries were reported in the blaze that burned through the day Tuesday, disrupting business at the Port of LA and the adjacent Port of Long Beach, which together handle 40 percent of America's import trade.

Port of Los Angeles spokesman Phillip Sanfield says with the exception of the terminal damaged by flames, all terminals will be up and running Wednesday.
