Salt Lake City will be filled with elite youth volleyball players this weekend as more than 40 elite teams from 12 states compete in the Triple Crown National Volleyball Championships at the Salt Palace Convention Center.
Competition runs Friday through Sunday. Teams promised at least eight matches on 10 courts at the Salt Palace.
The tournament is expected to generate more than $1 million for Salt Lake County's economy this year. Even bigger gains are forecast later in the three-year contract, said Utah Sports Commission President Jeff Robbins.
"It's an incredible opportunity for Utah to again host a national championship volleyball event," he added. "Utah has a vibrant volleyball infrastructure."
Much of the tournament's value comes from television coverage of the Elite 17 and Elite 18 championships on Sunday by CBS Sports Network. Those matches, scheduled for 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., are free for the public to attend, Robbins noted.
Eleven Utah teams are competing, led by Aces Volleyball out of Lehi and Club V from Woods Cross. Several players have committed to play next season at the University of Utah, Brigham Young University or Westminster College, Robbins said.
Teams are coming from California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Nevada, New York, Oregon and Texas.
Matches in four age divisions begin daily at 9:30 a.m. All matches will be webcast live at WatchTCS.com.
