Call LongHorn Steakhouse a franchise with a heart.

A year after the national company operated by Darden Restaurants opened its first location in Utah, it has donated more than 8,900 pounds of food to Salt Lake-area food banks through its Darden Harvest Program.

The steakhouse, which has donated more than 67 million pounds of food to community food banks since the program started 10 years ago, donates unused food to the Draper Foursquare Church, Serenity House and Family Support Center's Lifestart Village.

Items such as fresh fish and other meats, soups and vegetables are regularly donated.
