Digital First Media, the New York-based corporation that owns The Salt Lake Tribune, announced Friday that it had completed a merger of two giant newspaper chains under its management.

The merging of MediaNews Group and 21st Century Media yields a combined company with $1.3 billion in yearly revenues and a monthly audience of more than 67 million Americans accessing news through over 800 print, Web and mobile publications, Digital First Media said.

The transaction brings the two companies together under one name and will streamline their upper management and budgeting, John Paton, CEO of Digital First Media said in announcing the deal earlier this month.

"This is an important moment for our company and positions us to accelerate our growth under a single and innovative brand," Paton said.
