South Salt Lake is sponsoring its first-ever Restaurant Week as the culinary centerpiece of the city’s diamond 75-year anniversary.
In addition, the city is highlighting various activities each day at businesses and other establishments to help people get acquainted with the city through September.

This week, 12 restaurants are offering diamond discounts through Saturday.
"We are thrilled to celebrate our city’s diamond anniversary through Restaurant Week — a taste of what makes South Salt Lake a great place to live," Mayor Cherie Wood said in a statement. "We hope the community will invite their co-workers, families, neighbors and friends to dine in South Salt Lake in honor of this diamond anniversary."
Said Jeff Masten, owner and chef of the Left Fork Grill, "It’s great that the city is highlighting restaurants in the area."
A review by The Salt Lake Tribune said Left Fork Grill "is a classic diner, but in no way is this place a greasy-spoon." Dishes such as wiener schnitzel, open-faced turkey sandwiches and corned beef hash are made with exceptional execution — and one of the best delights is that Masten makes at least six kinds of pies daily.
The Left Fork Grill at 68 W. 3900 South is among several eateries tucked away in an area that people have long assumed are within the boundaries of Salt Lake City, its giant neighbor to the north.
The most notable example is KFC — the first restaurant in the global chain.
Today, KFC is part of the Yum Brands conglomerate,but it got its start in 1952, when Colonel Harland Sanders scored his first restaurant after he dropped by Harman’s Cafe at 3890 S. State St. to cook up his secret recipe for owners Pete and Arlene Harman.
The Harmans had struggled when they purchased the old hamburger stand, which coincidentally was painted white with red trim, the same colors of the future KFC franchise. Business picked up after Pete Harman and the colonel met at a short-course class at the University of Chicago before the latter traveled to Utah for that famous dinner with the Harmans.
At the time, South Salt Lake was only 14 years old.
The area, briefly known as Central Park, incorporated in 1938 — based on a need for a sewer. The sewer system was funded by the federal Works Project Administration, which put to work millions of unemployed people building public works projects during the Great Depression.
The city expanded through the years. Today, South Salt Lake is bordered by the Jordan River on the west, 500 East and 700 East on the east, 2100 South on the north, and 3900 South on the south.
