Chrysler to spend $52M at Michigan engine plants

DETROIT • Chrysler will spend $52 million on two Michigan plants so it can build more four-cylinder engines.

The investment will create 298 new jobs.

The company will invest $40.5 million at an engine plant in Dundee, Mich., southwest of Detroit. Chrysler will convert an assembly line to make cranks, heads and engine blocks for the 2-Liter four-cylinder Tigershark engine. Another $11.5 million will be used to add a Tigershark assembly line at the North engine plant in Trenton, Mich.

All of the new jobs will be in Trenton. Both plants will add production by the end of the third quarter.

Chrysler has sold just over a million vehicles so far this year. After hitting a 2009 low of 931,000, Chrysler sales grew to 1.6 million last year.
