From translating for Spanish-speaking children getting vaccination shots to taking vision tests, 12-year old Sarah Ortega of West Valley City has been helping out where needed the past two summers at the Salt Lake Community Action Program Head Start.

Her efforts recently earned her a $1,000 scholarship through the Kohl's Cares Scholarship program. Each year, the department store Kohl's recognizes and rewards community contributions and volunteer efforts of kids between the ages of 6 and 18.

Sarah says she felt good about being able to work with families through the Head Start program who otherwise may not have been able to afford the medical care. Her mother, Laura, works with Head Start and asked for Sarah's help as a translator, because so many of the people seeking services through the program do not speak English.

Sarah said that after the first day, she realized she wanted to continue helping. She plans on helping out again next summer.

When asked what she would spend her $1,000 scholarship on, Sarah said she would like to take architecture classes. She wants to be an architect when she grows up and build fun buildings, like activity centers or movie theaters, where families can relax and spend time together.
