Holladay • When it comes to knowing about the clientele for the new 124-room Hyatt Place Hotel that opened Tuesday at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon, area general manager Jeff Olpin enjoys a home-court advantage.
He grew up in the area and knows a bit about the nearby ski resorts in Big and Little Cottonwood canyons.
"Skiing is big in this area," he said. "The business complex is growing by leaps and bounds and we have some high-quality establishments right in our backyard. There is the Market Street Grill and other great restaurants. We needed a new hotel in the area. The Residence Inn [located nearby] always sold out."
Demand has been steady in the hotel's opening days this week and Olpin said his facility is sold out next week.
The hotel, at 3090 E. 6200 South, will employ 35 people. Its guest rooms include 42-inch high-definition televisions, plush beds, sectional sofa sleepers and complimentary Wi-Fi. It also features 3,200 square feet of space for meetings or events, a 24-hour restaurant, a coffee and cocktail bar and a free breakfast.
"Hyatt Place was designed for a lifestyle, not a demographic, and as a result, we are confident that everyone from business travelers to skiers will appreciate the open, intuitive design, casual atmosphere and practical amenities," Olpin said.
This is the third Hyatt Place in the Salt Lake Valley. The chain also has hotels at the Salt Lake City International Airport and at The Gateway mall in downtown Salt Lake City.
"We are excited to bring the Hyatt Place brand to the Cottonwood area with the opening of Hyatt Place Salt Lake City/Cottonwood," said Kevin Ludlow, president of Sequoia Development.
