General Dynamics unit offering 1,600 call center jobs in Sandy

A unit of defense contractor General Dynamics wants to hire 1,600 people to staff a new call center in Sandy.

The company is reticent to talk about what workers for its Information Technology group would do at the center on South Sandy Parkway or say how much the jobs would pay and whether they are temporary or long-term positions.

"The call center is in support of a contract we recently won with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services," Jennifer Harvey, a General Dynamics IT spokeswoman, said in an email Friday.

"General Dynamics IT was awarded [the] contract to provide contact center support to respond to inquiries from CMS customers, beneficiaries and new federally facilitated exchange enrollees nationwide," she said.

CMS is the federal agency that administers Medicare, Medicaid, and the State Children's Health Insurance program. FFEs are government-regulated markets for buying health insurance. They will operate in states that have decided not to build their own health exchange or that have joined forces with CMS.

Utah will have two marketplaces for health insurance — one run by the federal government for individuals; the other will be the state's existing Avenue H for employees of small businesses.

Michael Sullivan, a spokesman for the Governor's Office of Economic Development, said General Dynamics IC has leased the Sandy building for two years. The Virgina-based unit of General Dynamics Corp. has also leased a building in Layton for one year, Sullivan said.

"The new Sandy facility and the Layton facility are [there] because General Dynamics IT won a contract to do call center support on the Affordable Care Act," Sullivan said.

It isn't clear whether some of the 1,600 hirees will be stationed in Layton.

General Dynamics IT will conduct interviews all summer, with the expectation that all positions would be shortly afterward.

The company is looking for applicants who would fill roles as customer-service representatives, supervisors, call center managers, quality specialists and trainers. —
