Over the years, mobile phone carrier AT&T may have been getting pounded for its performance since adding the iPhone, but recently it's been getting the highest marks in Salt Lake City.

The much-maligned carrier was ranked best in overall performance in call quality, Internet service and dropped calls, according to a new report from Seattle-based RootMetrics, which measures mobile carriers' service.

In an analysis of more than 21,600 calls taken in April, the firm found that AT&T led the pack with Verizon in a close second, followed by T-Mobile, Sprint and Cricket. It was the second year in a row that AT&T led the survey for Salt Lake City.

RootMetrics' latest survey for the whole country showed Verizon led overall performance for 2012.

In a breakdown of the Salt Lake City survey, AT&T led in data performance, was a close second to Verizon in call quality and tied with all four other carriers in texting performance.
