In business for more than 70 years, the Peterson family early this summer will close down its namesake Riverton grocery store and move across the street, where it will give new life to yet another Fresh Market store that is ceasing operations.

The new location at 1784 W. 12600 South will offer expanded selections to longtime customers of Peterson's and to Fresh Market shoppers.

Over the next few months, crews will remodel the Fresh Market space, where room will be made for Peterson's well-known meat department, which features certified Angus Beef and its signature ground beef. The new Peterson's also will feature a larger produce section, an enhanced in-store dining experience and lower prices, as well as its customary made-from-scratch bakery.

The new location is 10,000 square feet larger than Peterson's present store.

"We are very excited to move Peterson's," said owner Monte Peterson. "For over 75 years, we have been serving our local communities in the southern part of the Salt Lake Valley. We love our neighborhood and guests, and hope they will continue to support and follow us across the street."

Operations manager Brandon Peterson added that customers "will be able to enjoy the incredible food and atmosphere they have always expected, but now in an improved location."

Peterson's and Fresh Market will both remain open until the remodeling project is completed. Once done, the Peterson's at 1777 W. 12600 South will close and be put up for sale or rent.

Peterson's Marketplace, founded in 1938 and family owned and operated, began as a small business that has grown into a full-service grocery store.

In 2009, the Riverton Fresh Market store was one of 34 Albertsons supermarkets purchased by the independent grocer cooperative, Associated Food Stores Inc., under whose umbrella Peterson's also operates. That meant Peterson's was pitched against a sister store, selling the same products it offered.

Monte Peterson, who is chairman of the board for Associated, said the Fresh Market stores ultimately boosted the buying power for all Associated members, although eight corporate stores have closed since the 2009 purchase.
