FJ Management, formerly Flying J, has bought an office building in Salt Lake City and will move much of its headquarters operation from Ogden later this month.

The company purchased the building at 185 S. State St. from Sun Life of Canada, Chief Financial Officer Andre Lortz said Tuesday.

The acquisition closed in January. Lortz declined to say what FJ paid for the 13-story building.

He also declined to say why FJ and sister company MacCall Management decided to move to Salt Lake City. About 30 people will relocate to the building, which is being renovated.

Messages to FJ CEO Crystal Call Maggelet for comment were not returned.

FJ owns the Big West Oil refinery in North Salt Lake and Transportation Alliance Bank (TAB), a financial services company aimed at the trucking industry. It also owns stakes in Electronic Fund Solutions (EFS), a credit card processing company, and in the Pilot Flying J network of travel centers.

In December, FJ acquired Maverick Inc., a fuel marketing company that runs a chain of gas station-convenience stores across the Intermountain West. FJ Management, founded in Utah in 1968 as Flying J by Jay Call, in October bought the controlling interest in Maverik, which was started in 1928 by Reuel Call. He later owned the company with Jay Call's father, Osborne, until the two brothers parted ways in the early 1960s.

As for FJ, Lortz said TAB and EFS will stay in Ogden.

MacCall Management runs the chain of Crystal Inn motels.

Lortz described the acquisition as an "investment." Tenants occupy most of the building. Flying J and MacCall Management will occupy one floor.
