BofA to offer counseling to customers facing home foreclosure

Bank of America is offering customers who are having trouble making mortgage payments the chance to attend a free event aimed at helping them keep their homes.

The daylong sessions Jan. 29-31 will be at the Red Lion Hotel, 161 W. 600 South, in Salt Lake City. Appointments are available from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day.

The bank has invited 2,300 customers within a 100-mile radius of Salt Lake City who are at least 60 days late on mortgage payments and haven’t contacted the bank. The number also includes customers seeking loan modifications.

As of Nov. 30, BofA had nearly 99,000 active loans in Utah, of which 11 percent were delinquent.

"Our goal is to help customers avoid foreclosure. Our specialists are equipped to review a variety of programs, including loan modifications and transition assistance," the bank said in a statement.

Lower interest rates, extending loan terms or making loans current by adding past-due payments to the existing balance are examples of loan modifications.

"If a loan modification is not possible, we can review them for other foreclosure-avoidance options such as a short sale or deed-in-lieu of foreclosure," the statement said.

Customers can register for the event and find a list of required documents at www.bankofamerica.com/homeownerevent or by calling 1-855-7426.

Spanish-language speakers will be available.

BofA will decide what action may be appropriate, as long as customers provide full documentation.

BofA hosted several similar events in Salt Lake City and Ogden last February.
